At some point, the decision was made to combine the art night David Lombardi, local area real estate investor, had created to promote the arts with all of the new galleries and fresh talent pouring into the district and offering a glimpse of local creativity. They appropriately named the event Second Saturdays, as that is when the Art Walk takes place - every second Saturday of every month.
Today, the place is filled with a variety of galleries and hundreds of art aficionados scampering from one gallery to the next. If you have never been, we encourage you to go. If you have already been, we still suggest you check it out because, thanks to the ever-growing, ever-changing local art scene, there is plenty of exciting new art to see.
While most of the galleries provide complimentary alcohol and snacks, those aren't your only choices for food and entertainment. The long-running Art Fusion Galleries generally have live music and an extensive wine list in addition to the wide variety of intriguing artwork to enjoy. In addition to the galleries, restaurants have begun popping up, eager to serve visitors, including the Lost and Found Saloon, the Bakehouse Art Complex, Brosia and Joey's - all offering full menus of local and comfort foods.
The Design District has really grown into something exciting over the years, and best of all, most of it is free, so if you are in the mood for food, art and music, check it out this Saturday, or any second Saturday of any month, all year long. It's a great opportunity to witness the growth of another bold Miami tradition, and experience a little art and culture, as well.
